Two Reasons Why You Might Not Want to Hire the Big, Out-of-State Law Firm to Handle Your Louisiana Mesothelioma Case

Georgia B. Day

You may have seen the frequent T.V. advertising by several big, out-of-state law firms that specialize in mesothelioma cases. While these advertisements may be appealing and may draw you in, keep in mind that choosing an attorney to represent you in a mesothelioma case —or in any case—is a very important decision.

You want to make sure that you choose an attorney that is not only experienced in the area of law governing your case but is someone you trust, feel comfortable with, are willing to work with and feel confident that they will do a good job for you. Your attorney, after all, represents you.

Big mesothelioma firms may be big, and they may handle many cases, but here are 2 reasons why you might want to consider not hiring one of those firms to handle your case.

  1. Personal Attention

Many of the big firms that handle thousands of cases across the United States are just that: big. In the legal field, generally the bigger a law firm is, the more impersonal it gets as far as client contact is concerned.

In a lot of these big law firms, you may be told that so-and-so senior attorney will be “handling” your case. But chances are, you will never see or speak to this senior attorney unless your case goes to trial.

Why?

Because in most big law firms, the day-to-day legal work (interviewing clients, answering client questions, drafting pleadings and discovery, etc.) is handled by less senior associates or even paralegals. Your senior attorney will supervise and review what happens in your case, of course, but chances are pretty good that you will have very little to no contact with him/her until you get to trial.

With a smaller firm, on the other hand, the attorney you hire to handle your case is the attorney that you interact with. He/she is the one who comes to your home to talk to you; he’s the one that sits with you at a deposition; he’s the one that explains the discovery process to you and answers your questions. Because they have fewer clients and fewer cases, smaller firms generally provide their clients with a level of personal attention that larger firms simply cannot.

  1. Local Knowledge

A second reason why not to hire the big, out-of-state law firms to handle your mesothelioma case is simply that they are not local.

Local attorneys are available and accessible because they are local. Out-of-state attorneys may have to travel (increasing your costs) to meet with you personally.

Also, it cannot be understated how important it is that local attorneys know the judges, the courtrooms (and courtroom clerks), the local rules of court, and possibly even opposing counsel. With a local attorney, you have a “home town” advantage. And here in Louisiana, that is important.

Plus, a local Louisiana attorney will understand you: your values and culture, as well as the industry you work in.

Attorneys may vary in experience, but they all have the same access to the law. However, only local attorneys engage in and care about the local community as we do.
