Some General Information About Traumatic Brain Injuries.

Any number of accidents— whether car accidents, falls, sporting accidents, crashes with a big rig, or oil rig explosions, or more— can leave an individual with a traumatic brain injury (“TBI”).

TBIs can have long-lasting and devastating effects on a person’s life and on those around him.

Because TBIs are so serious, it is important to know a little bit about them.

The Severity of Traumatic Brain Injuries.

Like any injury, the severity of a TBI can range from everything from a bump on the head to serious brain damage. Not surprisingly, then, the symptoms of TBIs have a wide variance as well.

However, one connection that medical professionals see with TBIs is that head injuries can change the injured person’s personality. Many victims of severe head injuries experience personality changes. Some are subtle changes, others are severe.

For example, neurological studies have shown a correlation between TBIs and a subsequent loss of emotional “empathy” in TBI patients. Studies have shown that TBI victims have a much higher incidence of problems in emotional processing, which often leads to difficulties in their relationships at home and make it more difficult for the TBI victim to heal.

TBIs can cause serious personality changes. An otherwise even-tempered person can become moody or prone to sudden emotional outbursts; which is why most TBI victims need emotional as well as physical therapy. Family and friends of a TBI victim also need support and help dealing with the changes in their loved one’s personality.

Studies conducted by Woods and Williams from the University of Swansea in the UK reportedly found a connection between TBIs and the emotion-processing regions of the brain, such as the frontal cortex. Their studies concluded that the frontal cortex, which is at the front of the brain is more susceptible to damage. As a result, Woods and Williams found that there is an elevated occurrence of emotional problems in TBI patients.

It is important to recognize the emotional impact of a head injury on a TBI victim when it comes to treatment and potential recovery.
